about
QUEEN KONA's "Rise of the Shogunate" features some of their most creative writing lyrically, as it details the historical rise of the shogunate militia within Kyoto, Japan. During the 1100s, Minamoto Yoritomo and the Minamoto clan rebelled against the Taira clan in the Genpei War, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate - a new, powerful militia government.
"Instrumentally, the highlight of this track is the complex, triplet-driven groove leading into Tommy’s barrage of vocals. We crafted an almost Meshuggah-like moment, with a Slipknot-inspired bass lead just prior. Tommy’s lyrics here describe, in detail, the physics and thought process behind swinging a legendary katana, and delivering a blow to an enemy. Everything about this moment screams adrenaline, and we love how it turned out. Finally, the war-chant breakdown after 3 of us scream, “Hail the Shogunate!” still sends chills up our spines."
lyrics
Great lord, we serve the Minamoto
The highest caste amongst Kyoto
We live and die by Bushido
Through blood and honor, live this credo
Within just an instant, my momentum is shifted
Bladed vengeance is swiftly given and I engage in this pernicious rhythm
With ultimate precision, life-altering incision
Lead first with my hips, then followed by my wrists
The master to ending this pestilence
Taira dies, clans exiled
With ultimate precision, life-altering incision
Lead first with my hips, then followed by my wrists
The master to ending this pestilence
This land now belongs to us
All praise unto the samurai
The militia gods of the establishment
Hail the Shogunate
Live by the Sword
A man’s honor lies only within his sword
Enriched in gold, emblazoned by our lord
The dance of the blades pledged to Yoritomo's reign
Long live the bakufu
Yoritomo sees all
Great lord, we serve the Minamoto
The highest caste amongst Kyoto
We live and die by Bushido
Through blood and honor, live this credo
Taira dies, clans exiled
